Family Support

Strengthening Families through Trust, Advocacy, & Care

At King Street Center, we believe strong families build strong communities. That’s why we launched our Family Support Program in 2024 to meet the growing and complex needs of the children and caregivers we serve every day.

Grounded in deep relationships and decades of trust, our Family Support Program provides wraparound care for over 400 community members each year. Led by a certified Health Connect Navigator and Financial Coach with 30 years of experience at King Street, this program offers personalized, proactive support that helps prevent crises before they happen.

What We Offer:

  • Housing Advocacy: We help families find stability, overcome voucher discrimination, and explore long-term solutions like home equity sharing.

  • Health & Financial Support: From enrolling in health insurance to resume building and job search coaching, we meet families where they are. Our director is a certified financial coach and provides financial literacy training for families interested in strengthening management of their finances.

  • Care Closet: Our Care Closet is always stocked with diapers, formula, warm clothing, school supplies, and hygiene items.

  • Basic Needs Fund: Our Basic Needs Fund provides families with emergency assistance access to critical supports when it matters most — both financially and with household essentials.

  • Food Security: King Street Center is a critical source of nutrition for many of our youth. Our Family Support Program offers assitance connecting to resources, fresh weekly produce, and full meals.

  • Navigating Legal Challenges: We connect families to legal resources and expertise during complex family transitions like divorce, custody, and separation.

  • Language Access: We ensure every interpretation services are provided when needed so every family can engage in their preferred language. All of our communications are sent in preferred languages.

  • Community Connection: Joyful, healing community gatherings — like our quarterly Family Dinners and our annual Block Party — foster relationships between staff and caregivers and reinforce a shared sense of belonging.

Last year we had the joy and privilege of helping a longtime King Street Center mom, Kamala, and daughter, Scarlet, navigate purchasing their first home.

Homeownership is tied to generational wealth, and the lifelong impact of that level of housing security is crucial on a child’s life. This happy story is surely worth listening to:

As federal safety nets weaken, families continue to turn to King Street for stability, guidance, and community. Even alumni — many now navigating adulthood — reach back out for help understanding job benefits, budgeting, or buying a car.

We’re committed to growing this work by keeping our Care Closet full, expanding Basic Needs funds, and eventually adding staff to meet the rising demand. Because when families are supported, children thrive.
